Bluesdesigns is run by my wife Carla & I, (Mike) Montgomery from our garden workshop in Gosport, Hampshire. We originally started out making bespoke Wedding Stationery over 10 years ago. Times changed and we certainly felt the pinch of the ever changing economic climate where people have less and less money to spend on their wedding luxuries. We fell upon the craft of candle making quite by accident as Carla decided to turn her hand to something new. We have always had candles burning throughout our home but all too often were disappointed in the poor quality of mass produced candles as they always seemed to smell lovely for the first few minutes then the fragrance would disappear. Carla read a few articles and did some research into making our own candles and Bluesdesigns Candles was born. We started making our own candles in 2014 and received great comments from our friends and family. The next obvious step was to gauge local interest in our handmade candle products. We were overwhelmed by the positive response and took the decision to offer our natural candle products to a wider market.
We only use natural, sustainable ingredients in our candles and have carefully selected containers that may be reused once the candle has finished.
At Bluesdesigns we use natural advanced eco soy wax in all of our candle products, combined with a scent ratio of no less than 8% which, may not sound a lot but many companies only use the ratio of 5-6%. This gives a better scent throw and helps ensure the fragrance lasts right to the end of the candle. We carefully select the scents and try, where possible, to use blended escentscia fragrance oils which are specifically made for use in candle making to give the optimum scent throw.
Soy wax candles have a more pastel shade than those made with paraffin based wax and the advanced soy wax we use has the properties of not blooming (white frosting effect) In addition to this Soy wax melts at a lower temperature and has virtually no "sooting" (this can cause discoloration of surfaces)
All of our wooden items are from reclaimed wood which we source locally to us. The wooden tea-light holders are hand carved and Carla burns the messages or phrases into them using a pyrography tool (yet another craft new to her)
The name Bluesdesigns came about as a result of Carla's childhood nickname of 'Blue'
